Photo
artist Igor German was born in Novosibirsk in 1960. He took interest
in photography since childhood. In 1985 he graduated from Moscow
Mossovet Polytechnic School, department of phototechniques. In 1990
moved to Israel. He has had many personal exhibitions and seminars
in Israel, Russia and former soviet republics, including those in
State Tretiakov Gallery, Museum of Architecture and Central House of
the Artist. He is a member of the Union of Russian Photo Artists,
Union of Moscow Journalists, Union of Israeli Art Workers (IURA).
From 1993 till 2000 he lived and worked in Jerusalem.
"When
I came to Jerusalem I fell in love with this city once and for all –
and I believe this was a mutual feeling. Probably I have already
lived in these parts in one of my former lives – I feel that I can
recognize every stone, every tree and sometimes it seems that the
City itself helps me to portray it better as if it were a living
being," – says Igor German.
This
exhibition is dedicated to trees. Every tree is beautiful; every
tree brings into the world a certain character, makes you think
about the eternal and the ephemeral. The trees of Jerusalem are not
ordinary, they are infiltrated with the energy of the city itself –
the city of Power and Strength. To reveal this beauty one have to
truly love this soil and, indeed, to adore and understand the nature
of the Trees.
Imagine
– there is no daily noise, and almost no people out. Only the night
and the photographer, only he and the Trees that have grown in the
blessed land. Photo artist Igor German has spent 7 years in
Jerusalem. Regularly, sometimes disregarding his personal safety, he
went out to do his nighttime photography sessions. The night is the
time when the magic that is invisible during the day reveals itself.
The nighttime photography is an unusual thing in itself. We are used
to the fact that making a picture takes only a moment. Many
photographs on this exhibition hold time periods of about an hour
projected on a piece of photographic paper. That's exactly how long
the light was falling on the film. This compressed information
brings forth a fascinating effect that you can perceive in a much
shorter period of time by regarding the picture. Each photograph is
supplemented by a commentary by artist Stasia Mital. English
